Created
in1993 the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra (PSO) is one of the
artistic organisms of the National Theater of São Carlos and has been
developing a symphonic activity itself,
including the regular programming of concerts and the participation in
festivals of national and international music. It has a regular
collaboration with Radiodifusão Portuguesa through the transmission of
its concerts by Antena 2 and the participation in innitiatives of RDP
itself, just as the Pedro de Freitas Branco Prize for Young Chiefs of
Orchestra, Prize for Young Musicians-RDP and the International Tribune
of Young Interpreters. Under other collaborations, its presence can
stand out in the following events: 8th Tornement Eurovision of Young
Musicians transmitted by Eurovision to around fiftheen countries
(1996); closing concert of the 47th International Festival of Music and
Dance from Granada (1997); concert of the Openning Gala of the Book
Fair of Frankfurt; closing concert of Expo 98; Contemporary Music
Festival of Alicante (2000); and Classical Theater Festival of Merida
(2003).
The Orchestra has been performing within the opera and symphony seasons
under the direction of remarkable conductors such as Rafael Frühbeck of
Burgos, Alain Lombard, Nello Santi, Alberto Zedda, Harry Christophers,
George Pehlivanian, Michel Plasson, Krzysztof Penderecki, Djansug
Kakhidze, Milán Horvat, Jeffrey Tate and Iuri Ahronovitch, amoung
others. The discography of the Orchestra has two CD's to the Marco Polo
label, with the Symphonies nbr 1 and nbr 5, and nbr 3 and nbr 6,
by Joly Braga Santos, which he recorded under the direction of his
first resident conductor, Álvaro Cassuto to whom it followed José Ramón
Encinar (1999/2001) and Zoltán Peskó (2001/2004) in the same position.
Donato Renzetti performed functions of First Conductor invited until
the 2006/07 Season. From the beginning of the Season 2008/09 Julia Jones holds the position of Principal Conductor. |
